Louisiana-style fried chicken chain Popeyes announced plans to enter the New Zealand market with a $25 million investment, opening 10 stores and creating 150 jobs across the country, according to an MSN report.
The company, known for its signature fried chicken and recently viral sandwich, said it will prioritize sourcing ingredients from local suppliers. The first store, located in Takanini, South Auckland, is slated to open later this year and will feature a “bespoke multi-million-dollar fit-out,” according to a company statement.
“We are thrilled to finally share the good news and let Kiwis know; the Chicken Sandwich that broke the internet will finally be ready for Kiwis to try themselves,” Sharn Phillips, head of marketing at Popeyes MF-New Zealand, said in the press release.
Popeyes’ fried chicken sandwich, launched in the United States in 2019, generated significant buzz and demand, leading to shortages at some locations. The intense popularity even contributed to a deadly incident at one U.S. store, according to news reports.
Popeyes is owned by Restaurant Brands International, which also operates Burger King and Tim Hortons. Recruitment for the New Zealand store is ongoing.
