Krispy Kreme signs joint venture agreement to launch in Spain

The US donut and coffee chain will open its first Spanish site with joint venture partner Glaseadas Originales in Madrid next year before rolling out stores in Barcelona, Valencia and Malaga.

US donut and coffee chain Krispy Kreme has signed a joint venture with recently formed entity Glaseadas Originales to open stores in Spain, starting with an outlet in Madrid in 2025.

Established in November 2023, Glaseadas Originales lists its primary role as a retailer of bread, pastries, candied foods, bakery products and coffee beverages.

Krispy Kreme, a minority investor in the venture, expects to develop a network of 500 points of access – including bricks-and-mortar outlets, supermarket kiosks and other retail locations where its products can be purchased – across the next five years, targeting the key cities of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Malaga.

“After a tremendous response in Europe following our successful entry into France and the announcement to open in Germany, we couldn’t be more excited to bring the Krispy Kreme experience to Spain. We believe our fresh doughnuts will be a wonderful addition to the thriving Spanish food market,” said Raphael Duvivier, Chief Development Officer, Krispy Kreme.

Krispy Kreme debuted in France in December 2023 with a store at the Westfield Forum des Halles shopping centre in Paris and has opened a further six outlets across the country this year.

In May 2024, the North Carolina-based operator signed a franchise agreement with restaurant group ISH Foods to open stores in Germany, with a first site in Berlin slated to open in early 2025. Krispy Kreme’s European presence also comprises outlets in across the UK, Ireland, Switzerland and Turkey.
